The Mechanisms of Memory Art Exhibition
The Delmar Riney Art Gallery at Pratt Community College is hosting an art exhibition of work by Monika Meler and Derrick Stanley. The Mechanisms of Memory will open Tuesday September 15 and will run through Friday October 9 of 2009. The gallery is open to the public and may be seen 8am-5pm Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
The exhibit features works on paper by two artists, Stanley and Meler, who have worked side by side for over seven years. Both artists live in Wichita currently, but most of the work in the exhibit was made when they lived in Rome, Italy. The work is an exploration of Meler’s past, her childhood in Poland and immigration to America through a variety of print media, and Stanley’s experiments in programming robots to draw. Both artists’ work is abstract and explores mark making, and the layering of images. The layers mimic the way memory is formed and the non-representational nature of the work comments on the inability to retain memory in any accurate way.
