Six students become certified in Humane Equine Management
Six students in the fall 2010 Horse Production class received the Humane Equine Management Certification.
The certification, which is through the Beef Cattle Institute, covers the importance of the well-being of the horse, housing, proper veterinary care and the breeding of the horse. It provides a horseman with the proper techniques for Humane Equine Management. The certification is available for students online.
The Beef Cattle Institute (BCI) was founded in August of 2007. The initial funding for this program was awarded by the Targeted Excellence Initiative at Kansas State University. The purpose of the BCI is to create a collaborative environment at Kansas State University to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues facing the beef industry through education, research and outreach.
The BCI has developed into a center for information over pressing issues affecting the beef industry. These issues include, but not limited to, animal welfare and the use of antimicrobials in cattle production. The institute is paving the way in online training with the Animal Care Training Web site, animalcaretraining.org, which offers a wide range of multimedia training modules in a variety of subjects. These subjects cover the areas of beef cattle, dairy cattle, and equine.
