Men’s Soccer Beats Neosho County
On Tuesday morning, the Men’s soccer team travelled to Chanute to take on the Neosho Panthers, knowing that the winner of this contest would move into the playoffs.
The game, again, was played in gale force winds. In the first half playing against the wind, each side had chances to score, however great goalkeeping from Charlie Samushonga, and fine defense led by Mitch Kavanagh, the Beavers went in at half time tied at 0-0.
Playing with the wind at their backs in the second half, the Beavers took control. Gary Rafferty scored a smashing header on a assist from Jonny Porta to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Braulio Morales made it 2-0, on an assist from Jon Henderson. Neosho pulled a goal back with 10 minutes left in the game, but Jonny Porta scored on a terrific shot from 25 yards out to secure the 3-1 win with 5 minutes left in the game.
This win puts the Beavers in the playoffs for the second straight year, and will finish with the seventh or eighth seed depending on other results.
“This was an all round team performance, the guys knew exactly what they needed to do, and went out and did it,” said Kevin Kewley, head coach. “The effort was fantastic, and hopefully we can maintain our good play into the playoffs.”
