PCC Wrestlers compete at Nebraska Tournament
The Pratt Community College Wrestling Team went to University of Nebraska at Kearny’s Tournament on Nov. 19. The Beavers had an overall good tournament with two freshman, Sheldon Graves, 165 weight class, took sixth place and Landon Keiswetter, 174 weight class, with a third place finish.
Zach Hoehn, 125 pounder, went 3-2 this weekend at UNK. His first match was a success against a University of Missouri wrestler, Dillon Hortsman, ending in a victory with a pin in 1:32. After his first match, Hoehn would take on a Colby Community College wrestler and lose 12-7, he quickly jumped back and won his next match with another pin to Labette Community Colleges Ryan Hodges in 3:39. He got on a roll and had another win against Andrew Schmauch, a wrestler for the University of Central Oklahoma 13-0. Hoehn’s last match of the day was against Ryan Brooks from UCO 12-2.
PCC’s 133 pounder didn’t start off quite as well. Skylar McComb’s lost his first match to Brandon Rubino a wrestler for UNL 8-2, but he came back in his next match and beat Jared Elmore of LCC 9-7, than beat Zach Vann from Newman University 6-5, and finished the day against Sean OLeary for UW 7-0.
141 pounder Forrest Carroll had a rough day and lost two in a row to Robert Lopez of New Mexico Highlands University and KlayKasik of UNK.
John Lynch, PCC’s 149 pounder started with a pin in 1:54 to Mike Ganny from Hasting College, and then lost 8-5 to LCC’s Jeromy Davenport, but came back to win three in a row 8-5 to Tyler Boyer of Midland University, 16-1 against Josh Redmond of CSU-Pueblo, and to NMHU wrestler Chris Rubalcaba 7-4. Lynch ended the day injury defaulting due to a shoulder injury earlier in the day.
Keegan Smith, 157 pounder started of slow with a loss to Colby Crank of BC 16-3, but came back to win two in a row to FHSU wrestler Bradley Little 2-1, and Conner Blanco of HC 4-1. Smith ended his last match of the day 0-2 to UNK’s Colton Johnson.
Tyler Cassity, unattached 157 pounder for PCC had a rough start and went 0-2 for the weekend to Cory Dauphin of UCO and Jeffery Walker of CSU-Pueblo.
165 pounder, Sheldon Graves had a good weekend and placed 6th at the tournament. He started off with a close win 4-3 against Kyle Allen of BC and then lost his second match 17-1 against Austin Wilson of UNL. Graves came back strong and beat Steadman Wang of HC 7-0. After that Graves had two close matches that went in to overtime with Josh Rodriguez of FHSU 2-1 and Jed Ferguson of CSU-Pueblo 1-0. Graves lost his last two matches to Chris Watson of UCO and Iver Sandoval of UNL.
Landon Keiswetter, the 174 pounder had a great weekend and started off with two wins with a pin against Garrett Wells of USAF in 2:06, and 2-0 finish with Zach Eaton of BU. Keiswetter lost his next match to Trevor Grant of CSU-Pueblo 3-6, but came back and beat Wells again with a pin in the first period. His last match of the day was against Willie Schwartzkopf of HC with a score of 7-4 for the third place title.
PCC’s 285 pounder was the only wrestler to be in the Elite Division at UNK’s tournament this past weekend and lost to Lane Tucker of UNL and Nick Bauman of UNK.
“I am very proud of our performance this weekend,” Ken Kepley, head coach said. “We competed with top teams in the country and you could tell we have gotten better. We have regrouped after Wednesday and rose to the occasion and we are getting better every day.”
The wrestlers are back from break and working hard for their upcoming tournament this Saturday, December 3 at Fort Hays State University.
