Students in the Electrical Power Technology program may get a late Christmas present this year.
KansasWorks, a government funded program, to help connect employees with jobs in Kansas, is giving out scholarships across the state to full-time students going into an energy related field.

The company contacted Dave Campbell, EPT program coordinator, and said they were rewarding students with scholarships up to $3,000 for school needs. The scholarship could include books, tuition, babysitting, transportation and more, depending on students needs.

Two employees from KansasWorks were on PCC’s campus Jan. 11 to interview 37 students and are also going to Wichita and Coffeyville to interview PCC students at those locations.

Campbell said after having many conversations with them about the scholarships, he has found out that majority, if not all of the students who interview and meet the qualifications will receive at least a partial scholarship.

The scholarship amount depends on need and time left for completion.

“I think it is excellent for students to get financial assistance in a field that will benefit everyone,” Campbell said. “Many of the students struggle to make ends meet when they are in school and this will be a great help to them.”

The students will find out next week how much scholarship money they are being awarded.
According to Campbell, the KansasWorks program had extra money to spend and decided this is where it would be best used.

“It is good to see the government help these guys,” he said. “It is important to the government to have strong infrastructure so they are willing to invest in it.”
