Shane Wedd enters his first season as the hitting coach for the Pratt Community College Beavers. He is no stranger to the Pratt community; Shane was born in Pratt while his dad, Dirk, was the Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Football Coach for the Beavers. His mom, Gwen, also coached volleyball, tennis, and cheerleading at Pratt Community College.
Prior to his hire at Pratt, Shane was the General Manager of the Kansas City Sluggers Baseball Club. Shane was hired by the Sluggers in 2000 as Director of Baseball Operations. His duties over the last seven years have included: overseeing the development of the players and coaches in the Sluggers program, the day-to-day business operations, running camps and showcases, and coaching the Sluggers 18u nationally recognized elite summer team. Wedd coached all facets of the game including offense, catching, and pitching. The Sluggers qualified for the AABC Connie Mack Regional five times and the Premier World Series in 2006. Wedd has coached 101 players that have gone on to play college baseball, including 30 Division I players and 10 players that have been drafted into professional baseball.
In the summer of 2007, Wedd was an assistant coach for the Falmouth (MA) Commodores in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. While coaching third base and working with the Commodores’ hitters and catchers, Wedd helped the team finish second in the Cape Cod League playoffs. The Commodores showcased some of the Cape Cod League’s best talent. Baseball America ranked the Top 30 professional prospects in the 2007 Cape Cod League, and 8 of the Top 30 were Falmouth Commodores, including the league’s MVP Conor Gillaspie and the league’s Top Pro Prospect Aaron Crow. Wedd will return to Falmouth in the summer of 2008 to serve as an assistant coach again for the Commodores.
Wedd played collegiately at the University of Kansas, lettering for the Jayhawks from 1997-2000. Shane primarily played catcher and first base for the Jayhawks while being voted team captain his junior and senior seasons by his teammates. He finished his career in the Top 10 for career homeruns at KU. He was a three-time Honorable Mention Academic All-Big 12 performer, and was named First Team Academic All-Big 12 in 2000. He was named the recipient of the 2000 Ron MacDonald Coaches Award, given by the coaching staff at KU, for his leadership contributions on and off the field.
Wedd was raised in Lawrence, Kansas. He attended Lawrence High School where he lettered in football and baseball. He was named First Team All-State in both football and baseball while helping the Lions win the state championship in both sports his senior year.
