Stressing the interconnection of Pratt Community College’s science courses and the small class sizes which lead to individualized attention for students, science teacher Carol Bonham provides a wealth of years teaching the natural world to a wide variety of students.
Starting out with a Bachelor of Science from K-State in Biology, Carol continued on to receive an MS in Physical Sciences from Fort Hays State University, as well as graduate hours in mathematics from Wichita State. Before moving to Pratt, this knowledgeable science teacher taught grades 8-12, math and science, for Shawnee Mission USD #512 for twelve years. As a testament to her strong teaching, Carol has received a grant from the state of Kansas for Outstanding Rural Science Teachers. Teaching for PCC full-time for 15 years, Carol also taught adjunct for PCC prior to her move here, plus she’s taught classes for Hutchinson Community College.
Currently on campus, this science devotee teaches Fundamentals of Chemistry, General Chemistry I and II, and Intro to Geology. In addition, online she instructs classes for Edukan. In whatever mode she teaches, she enjoys the process of helping students study the natural world.
At PCC, she likes the variety of teaching in several areas of science, the interaction within the science department, and helping students achieve their academic goals. She feels that Pratt Community College is small enough that students receive individual attention. In years past, stand-out memories were going on trips with the Academic Excellence teams to competitions when she sponsored the group.
Within the community, Carol has been very active. As a member of the Pratt United Methodist Church, she has served in various volunteer capacities. She served as a Girl Scout leader when her daughter was in elementary school. Carol sewed costumes when her son was involved in PCC theatre. She has been a Youth Group leader. Plus, she participates in the American Cancer Society Walk for Life. These are just a few of the many volunteer activities which Carol has been involved with through the years.
An involved and caring teacher, Carol holds a dedication to strong academics. As she continues to teach general education students, nursing students, and medical students, she emphasizes hands-on work, analytical thinking, and a climate of exploration into the world of science.
