Volleyball Goes Down Swinging in Regional Semis

By:Patrick Hall Sunday, 4 November, 2007

The PCC Volleyball team played one of its finest games of the season in the first set of the Regional semi-finals against Cowley on Saturday, taking the game 30-25. The Beavers could not, however, maintain their momentum and dropped the contest 1-3, losing the next three 22-30, 20-30 and 18-30.

Behind their trademark defense, the Beavers were able to get their offense going early against Cowley. Lacey Olin and Kelly Settle both hit well from outside, collecting 5 and 3 kills respectively, and Taylor Randall added a couple from the right. Both middles, Mandy Zeka and Ashley Simons, also got into the act with 3 apiece.

But what caught Cowley off guard was clearly the Pratt defense. Not much hit the floor, and the Beavers capitalized on their 25 digs for the game.

It wasn't really the offense or the defense that failed later in the match; it was simply the passing game. After the 30-25 win in the first game, Pratt dropped the next three 20-30, 22-30, and 18-30.

As a team, Pratt hit .250 in the fourth game, but passing serve had deserted them.

Lacey Olin led the team with 17 kills. Taylor Randall added 10, and Kelly Settle added 9. Heather Williams finished the match with 35 assists. Courtney Purcella led the defense with 28 digs. Olin and Randall also finished in double figures with 16 and 14 respectively.

Pratt finished the season at 15-20. Lacey Olin and Courtney Purcella both received recognition on All-Conference and All-Region teams.
