By:Patrick Hall Thursday, 29 November, 2007 Thursday night the Pratt Community College Wrestling Team, ranked 16th in the nation, played host to fourth ranked Neosho County Community College. The match was close throughout, but in the latter bouts Neosho pulled out the 25-11 victory. The dual started out looking promising for the Beavers when Andrew Carrillo got Pratt off to a promising start by defeating NCC's Danny Williams 13-3, scoring the major decision. Zach Hentzen followed up Carrillo with a 13-2 major decision over Ty Jaquess, giving the Beavers an 8-0 lead in the team score. Neosho was able to answer back winning the next three matches putting the Panthers up 12-8. In the 184 lb. bout Pratt's Kirk Fairley lost a hard fought overtime match to Neosho's Tim Cross 4-2. Fairley was a replacement for Michael Malay who was out with the flu. Fairley and Malay will challenge later next week for the varsity spot. "That was Kirk's first match of the year, said Head Coach Chas Thompson. "Kirk lost, but I was very happy with his shape and his determination in the match." In arguably the most exciting match of the night, Pratt's #5 ranked Carl Wilkinson defeated Neosho's Daunte' Nixon 4-2 in double overtime, making the score 15-11 for the Panthers. Unfortunately that's as close as Pratt would get. Neosho went on to win the next three matches all by decision giving them a 24-11 victory over the Beavers. At 125 lbs #8 ranked Tommy Edgmon lost 9-8 to #3 ranked Donte' Butler in a nail biter. "Tommy looked really good out there tonight for us," said Thompson. "I thought he was going to pull it out for us. Going into the third period we had a 5-2 lead but I guess that wasn't enough. That will be a match to look forward to come Regional's time. This dual was a tough loss for us. We had a few guys out but so did they. We're going to review tape tomorrow and try to improve on the mistakes we made tonight." Pratt travels to Hays Saturday for the Fort Hays State Open. 125- Butler, N, WBD Edgmon 9-8 Pratt 11 Neosho 24
