Summer Art Workshops at Pratt Community College

Monday, 19 May, 2008

ach summer the art faculty at PCC schedules week end art workshops offered to students and the community. “The week end format works well for most people”, says Marsha Shrack, workshop coordinator, “ Everyone is busy but it’s pretty easy to take a couple of days to be creative and learn something new”. That is what summer art workshop participants have been doing at PCC for over 15 years.

“Many people come back year after year from all over the state”, says Shrack. This year we have 2 workshops available June 6 and 7.
The first is an Oil Painting workshop with James Caldwell, an experienced oil painter and teacher. The workshop will explore composition and color in the still life and portrait (student choice). “Some painting experience is required but you don’t have to be a professional painter”, says Shrack. Caldwell is a Formal Realist, mixing photorealism with abstraction and surrealism. He has his MFA in Painting from WSU. He is also an excellent teacher with a great sense of humor. He currently teaches at Halstead High School.
A unique feature of both workshops is that most materials are provided.
The second workshop is Ceramic Horsehair Firing with Cindy Patterson. Patterson has worked extensively with alternative firing methods. Students can
bring 2-3 small to medium bisque fired pots to horsehair fire. Pots will be available to learn with if the participant does not have bisque pieces to bring. Workshop will focus on methods of preparing pottery, burnishing and firing with horsehair, feathers and other hair and organic materials. Post firing finishing methods will also be covered.
Both workshops are June 6 and 7, Friday 11am-9pm and Sat. 9am-4pm. The workshop is offered for 1 credit hour. Students can enroll by phone at 1-(620)-450-2184 or 1-(800)-794-3091 ext. 184. Current PCC students can also enroll online. Tuition and fees for 1 credit hour is $74. Senior citizen (62 and older) cost is $29.
